About
Naden Harbour and Henslung Cove on Langara Island are the centres for fishing lodge resorts and are popular destinations for guided and non-guided saltwater fishing vacations. The Rennell Sound area on the southern end of the heritage site/conservancy is the only west coast area on Graham Island that is accessible by vehicle and is a popular area for fishing. When translated from the Haida language, Duu Guusd means "West Coast". Hear the pronunciation of Duu Guusd from language speaker, Jasḵwaan Bedard, speaking X̱aad Kíl, the Old Massett dialect of the Haida Language. There were once numerous dialects of the Haida language, as many dialects as there were villages. In the present day, there are three recognized dialects of the Haida language. In Northern Haida there is X̱aad Kíl, also known as the Old Massett dialect of the Haida language. In Southern Haida Gwaii the dialect is called X̱aayda Kil, or the Skidegate dialect of the Haida language. The third dialect is also called X̱aad KIl, and is spoken by Ḵ'íis X̱aadee peoples from Southeast Alaska. Duu Guusd Heritage Site/Conservancy is the only protected area on Haida Gwaii with a significant representation of all of Haida Gwaii’s three terrestrial physiographic ecosections (Windward Queen Charlotte Mountains, Skidegate Plateau and Queen Charlotte Lowlands). Some unusual geological features include Pillar Rock, Beehive Hill and Celestial Bluff.
